Housing Discrimination against seniors is a rampant issue in the United States. Currently, age is not a protected class under the Fair Housing Act. Consequently, the elderly have no protection against housing discrimination (unlike other protected classes like race, disability, and sex) and millions of seniors are being evicted. This untenable state of affairs has been made worse by predatory companies like Airbnb and Wall Street developers that have stripped millions of units from the rental market. Given the expected growth of the elderly population, the acute housing shortage in many cities, and the economic vulnerability of the elderly, it is essential that age become a protected class under the FHA, and that housing specifically for the senior population be increased.
